Conduit Bender Guide: Hand, Electric & Hydraulic Systems
Choose the bender by the conduit and attachment system—not by motor power alone. This guide separates hand, cordless/electric and hydraulic workflows and links to model-specific compatibility tools.
Start with the system, not the motor
Conduit type → trade size → bender model → shoe → roller/backformer → bend procedure. A powered bender is only useful when the attachment stack matches the conduit you are actually bending.

Two current ecosystems show why model compatibility matters
MilwaukeeMilwaukee model 5150-20 is a portable cordless powered bender for galvanized EMT through 1" and RMC through 3/4". Milwaukee publishes three removable shoe sizes and states that those shoes are exclusive to the 5150-20 system.
GreenleeThe Greenlee 555 ecosystem is built around a floor power unit plus model-specific single-shoe or multi-conduit attachment groups. The 555C, 555CX, 555DX and 555DX-22 do not all use the same EMT support package.

What to check before buying a powered conduit bender
1 · ConduitType comes before diameter
EMT, rigid metallic conduit, IMC and PVC-coated rigid can require different shoe and support geometry. A 1" label alone is not enough to establish a valid setup.
2 · CapacityCheck the full size range you use
A branch bender optimized for 1/2"–1" EMT is a different purchase from a 1/2"–2" production bender. Buying for only today’s size can create an expensive second-tool problem later.
3 · AttachmentsPrice the shoe system, not just the power unit
Power units are frequently sold separately from some shoes, rollers or material-specific groups. The accessory cost and availability are part of the system cost.
4 · WorkflowPortable branch work vs prefab production
Battery power and a tripod can be valuable at the point of installation; a heavier floor bender can be more appropriate in a prefab area where 2" conduit and repeated setups are normal.
Attachment compatibility is where expensive mistakes happen
The power unit name is only the first identifier. Greenlee’s current 555 documentation provides a useful example: the 28008 rigid shoe group and 12586 PVC-coated rigid group are documented across 555C, 555CX, 555DX and 555DX-22 in the single-shoe manual, while the 23803 EMT group is for 555C and the legacy 13934 EMT group is for 555CX, 555DX and 555DX-22. The related roller/support pieces also differ.
Milwaukee’s current 5150-20 system takes the opposite approach: Milwaukee states that the 49-16-0012, 49-16-0034 and 49-16-0001 bending shoes are exclusively compatible with the M18 FUEL Branch Conduit Bender. That makes the tool/shoe relationship simpler, but still not interchangeable with a conventional hand bender head.

Layout math and machine compatibility are separate questions
Offset spacing and shrink can be expressed with repeatable field constants, but a layout calculation does not tell you which shoe belongs on a power unit. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hand conduit bender and an electric conduit bender?
A hand bender uses operator leverage and is normally matched to a specific conduit size. An electric or powered bender uses a motor or hydraulic power and usually supports a larger production workflow, but still requires the correct shoe, roller or backformer for the conduit type and size.
Can one conduit bender bend EMT, rigid and IMC?
Some systems can, but the same shoe is not automatically used for every material. The bender power unit, shoe group, roller or support and conduit-size range must be checked in the manufacturer documentation.
Are conduit bender shoes interchangeable between models?
Only when the manufacturer explicitly documents that relationship. Greenlee, for example, publishes model-specific 555-series shoe-group compatibility, while Milwaukee states that its 5150-20 bending shoes are exclusive to that tool.
When does an electric conduit bender make sense?
Powered bending is most attractive when the job involves repetitive bends, larger conduit, prefabrication or enough production volume that setup consistency and reduced manual effort justify the equipment.
Is a conduit bending multiplier universal?
Offset geometry is mathematical, but field tables are rounded and manufacturer procedures can differ. Use the multiplier/shrink values tied to the method or bender instructions you are following.
