A knockout punch is not a stand-alone part. The driver, draw stud, punch, die, conduit trade size and material rating have to work as one system. This guide explains that chain before you compare a manual, hydraulic or battery-powered knockout set.

Driver or wrench → draw stud → punch → die → material/thickness. If any one of those changes, re-check the documented system.

Mild steel and stainless steel can have different limits. A set that is suitable for one material should not be assumed suitable for the other, even if the nominal knockout size is the same.
The driver determines the pulling system and often the supported draw studs. A manual ratchet kit and an 11-ton hydraulic kit can use different studs even when they share punch sizes.
The stud is part of the compatibility chain, not generic hardware. Check the exact stud specified for the punch size and driver rather than assuming another brand’s stud will thread correctly.
Cross-brand use can be legitimate when a manufacturer documents it, but adapter direction matters. Milwaukee 49-16-2685 is a FORCE LOGIC-to-other-brand path; service documentation describes 49-16-2684 as a competitor-power-unit-to-Milwaukee-EXACT path.

Greenlee’s current Slug-Buster product family illustrates how closely related sets can still differ. The 7238SB manual kit is specified for mild steel and uses ball-bearing draw studs, while the 7236 hydraulic set is documented for Greenlee hydraulic drivers and adds a stainless-steel rating. Greenlee also states on selected 11-ton hydraulic kits that the same draw studs are used with Intelli-PUNCH, LS50L2 and the 746A ram.
Milwaukee provides a useful example of why adapter direction must be recorded. Adapter 49-16-2685 is documented for using other major-brand punches and dies with Milwaukee FORCE LOGIC knockout tools; the current product page explicitly lists 1/2"–2", while operator-manual wording is broader. Milwaukee service documentation describes 49-16-2684 in the opposite direction—for competitor power units to Milwaukee EXACT 2-1/2"–4" dies. The finder keeps larger or brand-specific cross-brand combinations unknown when the reviewed documentation does not resolve them precisely.
A documented cross-brand adapter path is not evidence that unrelated draw studs, punches or dies are universally interchangeable. Keep the exact tool, size and adapter requirement attached to the claim.
Tool force and punch design have to be considered together. Milwaukee’s current 10-ton operator manual lists the EXACT system through 4-inch conduit sizes at 10-gauge mild steel or 12-gauge stainless steel, with the 5-inch and 6-inch punches limited to 12-gauge mild steel or 14-gauge stainless steel. Greenlee’s 7236 hydraulic Slug-Buster set lists up to 10-gauge mild steel or 12-gauge stainless steel for its documented size range.
Those ratings belong to the specific documented products. They should not be generalized to every knockout punch carrying the same nominal conduit size.
Electrical knockout punches are commonly labeled by conduit trade size. The finished hole is larger because it must accept the fitting or connector associated with that trade size. Greenlee, for example, publishes both conduit-size labels and metric/decimal hole dimensions on current punch-set pages.
This distinction matters when replacing a single punch or die: match the manufacturer’s catalog number or actual hole specification, not merely a measured conduit outside diameter.
Start with a driver or punch/die family and check the documented size, material, draw-stud and adapter path.

The manufacturer explicitly supports the stated tool/accessory/application combination.
The relationship is supported only with a specified adapter, stud, head or other intermediate component.
Mechanical fit may be reported, but reliable manufacturer documentation for the intended use has not been established.

A hydraulic knockout punch can be a remote ram/pump system or a self-contained battery-hydraulic tool. The hydraulic driver changes force and workflow, but it does not make punches, dies or draw studs universal. Greenlee 746A-based sets, LS50L2/Intelli-PUNCH systems and Milwaukee FORCE LOGIC drivers each have documented accessory paths and material limits.

A knockout punch makes a clean round opening in material such as electrical enclosures and panels. A complete setup normally involves a driver or wrench, draw stud, punch and matching die, all within the material and size limits documented for the system.
Sometimes, but never by assumption. Some manufacturers explicitly document competitive punch/die use or shared draw-stud paths for specific sizes. The exact driver, draw stud, punch, die, adapter, size and material must be checked.
Only when the punch, die and driver combination is rated for the material and thickness. For example, current Milwaukee EXACT punches/dies and selected Greenlee hydraulic Slug-Buster systems are documented for both mild and stainless steel, but manual kits can have different ratings.

The draw stud passes through the pilot hole and connects the punch/die assembly so the driver or wrench can pull the punch through the material. Stud size, threading and driver compatibility are part of the system and should not be assumed to be universal.
They solve overlapping but different needs. Knockout punches are designed for controlled round openings in suitable sheet materials; hole saws are a different cutting system. The right choice depends on material, thickness, access, required hole quality and the equipment available.
