Greenlee G1 Versi-Tugger Guide
The G1 is a handheld, drill-powered 1,000-pound cable puller—not a scaled-down G3. Its drill interface, tapered capstan, universal conduit head and replaceable boom/capstan components make exact setup and part identification especially important.
G1 selection chain
G1 tool → compatible pistol-grip drill → conduit 1/2–4 in → cable #14–1/0 → approved line/rope → pull-force limit → exact G1 replacement part.
Last technical review: August 27, 2026.
G1 capacity: 600 pounds constant, 1,000 pounds peak
Greenlee publishes the G1 Versi-Tugger at 1,000 pounds peak pulling force and describes a constant pull force up to 600 pounds. The current product page lists #14 through 1/0 electrical cable and a universal pulling head for 1/2-inch through 4-inch conduit.
Those ranges define the product’s intended class, but they do not prove that every pull within #14–1/0 will stay under the force limit. Pull length, bends, fill, cable jacket, conduit and lubrication still determine actual tension.
Use the right drill architecture—not just any 20V tool
Greenlee says the G1 works with most 18–20V cordless drills and its 2025 selection guide describes a pistol-grip drill style. The puller is driven through its input adapter, so drill condition, chuck engagement and the G1 drill-strap/input-adapter components matter to the system.
The G1 should not be treated like a battery-integrated tugger. The drill is the prime mover, while the G1 supplies the capstan, boom, conduit interface and load path.
The universal pulling head covers 1/2-inch through 4-inch conduit
Greenlee’s current G1 page states that the one-size-fits-all pulling head attaches to conduit from 1/2 inch through 4 inches. The 17-inch rotatable boom has three length positions and can be extended using 1-inch rigid conduit.
That flexibility is one of the G1’s main advantages in crowded electrical rooms, but the boom extension must still follow the manufacturer instructions. Do not improvise longer or different structural extensions simply because another piece of pipe fits.
Line and rope range is different from the larger Greenlee Tuggers
Greenlee’s cable-puller selection guide lists poly line, poly measuring tape and pulling rope from 1/4 inch through 1/2 inch for the G1. That is a very different load-path architecture from the G3’s dedicated 1/2-inch 10,000-pound-minimum rope or the G6/GX10 heavy pulling ropes.
When selecting line, do not assume that the largest rope that physically wraps the capstan is automatically appropriate. Use the G1 manual and the line/rope manufacturer’s rating for the actual pull.
G1 replacement parts are unusually well documented
| Greenlee part | Description | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| G1-R11 | Replacement input adapter kit | Connects the drill drive to the puller input system. |
| G1-R12 | Replacement drill strap kit | Part of the drill-retention setup. |
| G1-R13 | Replacement capstan wall kit | Supports the removable-wall / line-unloading feature. |
| G1-R14 | Replacement boom kit | Includes the boom/puller-head path documented in the manual. |
| G1-R15 | Replacement handle kit | G1-specific handling structure. |
| G1-R16 / G1-R18 | Replacement capstan kits | Use the exact revision/description from current Greenlee parts data before ordering. |
| G1-R17 | Replacement hardware kit | Model-specific fasteners/hardware. |
| G1-R19 | Replacement decal kit | Restores model/safety identification. |
| G1-R20 | Replacement release-pins kit | G1-specific release-pin service path. |
Greenlee’s December 2025 Rev. 2 manual includes an exploded view and parts list, which should be preferred over marketplace descriptions when identifying service components.
The tapered capstan is designed for fast line unloading
Greenlee highlights the removable spool wall and tapered capstan because poly line can slide off after a pull without reversing the drill. This is an operating feature, not a reason to exceed the puller’s rope/line guidance. Inspect the capstan and wall components for damage and use the exact G1 instructions when servicing them.
When to step up from G1 to G3 or larger
If calculated pulling tension approaches the G1’s 600-pound constant range, if cable size exceeds the documented #14–1/0 range, or if the setup needs a dedicated powered tugger architecture, move to the larger class rather than trying to make the G1 behave like a G3. Greenlee’s G3 starts at a 1,200-pound continuous rating and uses a dedicated 1/2-inch pulling rope.
See the Greenlee Tugger Guide for the full G1/G3/G6/GX10 comparison.
