Cable Pulling Rope: Size, Strength & Tugger Compatibility
Pulling rope is a rated load-path component. Select it from the tugger’s maximum force, the manufacturer’s capstan/rope specification and the rope’s maximum rated capacity—not from diameter or breaking strength alone.

Maximum capacity is not the same as average breaking strength
Greenlee’s current rope catalog publishes both values. For example, its 3/4-inch nylon/polyester rope has a 26,000-pound average breaking strength but a 6,500-pound maximum capacity. Its new 19/32-inch High Performance Rope publishes 40,000 pounds average breaking strength and 10,000 pounds maximum capacity.
For selection, use the manufacturer’s maximum capacity and tugger compatibility—not a self-created safety factor applied to the breaking-strength number. Greenlee states that the rope’s maximum rated capacity should meet or exceed the tugger’s maximum pulling force.

G3: use the dedicated 1/2-inch requirement
Greenlee’s current G3 page specifies 1/2-inch polyester double-braided rope with a 10,000-pound minimum breaking strength. That should take priority over selecting a generic 1/2-inch rope only because the diameter matches. Construction and strength are part of the requirement.
G6 and 6001: 3/4-inch, 26,000-pound double braid is explicitly documented
The current G6 product page specifies 3/4-inch double-braided composite rope rated at 26,000 pounds. Greenlee publishes the same 3/4-inch / 26,000-pound rope family for the 6001, with catalog numbers 35098 (300 ft), 35100 (600 ft) and 35101 (1,200 ft). Those ropes carry a 6,500-pound maximum capacity in Greenlee’s rope table.
That 6,500-pound capacity matches the 6001’s published maximum, while it exceeds the G6’s 6,000-pound momentary rating.
GX10: Greenlee’s High Performance Rope reaches the 10K capacity class
Greenlee’s HPR300/HPR600/HPR1200 family is 19/32 inch with a published 40,000-pound average breaking strength and 10,000-pound maximum capacity. Greenlee lists High Performance rope for GX10 and other compatible heavy pullers. This is a useful example of why diameter alone is misleading: the 19/32-inch HPR has a higher published maximum capacity than the larger 7/8-inch rope family in the same current table.
Do not substitute rope diameter by eye
A capstan needs the rope construction and diameter the puller manufacturer allows. A rope may be strong enough yet still be the wrong diameter, surface, construction or condition for the capstan. Conversely, a rope that wraps correctly may have inadequate rated capacity for the puller.
The selection order should therefore be: exact puller manual → allowed rope construction/diameter → rated capacity → length → inspection condition.
Inspect and retire rope using manufacturer criteria
Pulling rope is a wear item. Greenlee provides a dedicated Pulling Rope Inspection and Care document from its rope page. Before a high-force pull, inspect for cuts, abrasion, glazed or melted fibers, contamination, damaged eyes and other conditions identified by the rope manufacturer. Do not “down-rate” visibly damaged rope by guesswork.
Rope is only one link in the pulling system
A 10,000-pound-rated rope does not make a 6,600-pound grip, low-capacity swivel or marginal anchor into a 10K system.
