Crimping dies are selected by a complete connection system, not by conductor size alone. This reference separates W- and U-style fit, adapter paths, die indexes and documented cross-brand relationships.

Tool → head/jaw → die family → conductor → connector → die/index → documented approval or classification. Physical fit alone is not enough.

A crimp die defines the compression profile, not merely the wire size. Two dies for the same AWG/kcmil conductor can differ because the connector material, barrel geometry, manufacturer, crimp type or tool system differs. Use conductor size as a filter, not as the final answer.

Greenlee's 2025 Utility Catalog includes a 12-ton crimping die cross-reference with Greenlee, Burndy, T&B, ILSCO, Huskie, Panduit, Blackburn and Penn-Union numbers for selected color-coded lug/splice applications. Greenlee also states that the referenced 12-ton dies can be used with its 1230, 1240 and E12CCXL tools up to the tool's capacity.
This is excellent evidence for a specific tool/die relationship. It is not permission to create a generic equivalency table for every connector series.

Burndy and other connector systems use color coding as a field identification aid, while the die index identifies the required groove/profile. A connector can also specify number and location of crimps. The safest workflow is to match the exact connector catalog family to the die/index table and then verify the tool/head that accepts that die.

A mixed die set can be convenient only if its dies match the tool and the connector system you actually use. Buying a box labeled by AWG sizes before identifying the connector family reverses the correct selection order. For professional terminations, compatibility should be established first and shopping second.
Sometimes a manufacturer explicitly documents a shared die form or competitive die path. Examples include industry W-style die support and some 12-ton U-die systems. That establishes only the documented scope; it does not make every connector application cross-brand approved.
They are different physical die families commonly associated with 6-ton and 12-ton tooling respectively. The exact tool head/jaw and connector instructions determine which family is appropriate.
No universal assumption should be made. Some tools explicitly accept industry U-style dies, while others require adapters or different die systems. Check the exact head/tool documentation.
Color codes help identify the intended connector/conductor range, while die indexes identify the groove/profile required by the connector system. The catalog number and index are more reliable than color alone.
A die adapter allows one head or higher-force tool to hold a different die family when the manufacturer documents that path. The adapter itself becomes part of the approved tooling chain.
